Carl Oprisch Obituary

Carl Edward Oprisch, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on April 15th, 2024 at East Ohio Regional Hospital.  He was 93 years old.

Born to Victor and Louise Gehlert Oprisch on November 4, 1930.  Carl graduated from Steubenville Catholic Central High School in 1948 and was a long-time season ticket holder for Crusader football.

Carl married his wife Donna (Freeman) on 10/11/58 and they had 5 children.   Michael (deceased), Victor (Sheryl) of West Chester, Ohio, Beth of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Karl (Kathy) of Massillon, Ohio and Ellen (Gus) Christakis of St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Carl was an avid gardener and many people were fortunate to benefit from his vegetables and home made crushed red peppers   He most loved family gatherings with good food, cold beer and maybe a cigar. The man loved a good deal and a bargain.

He served in the Korean War as a corporal in the US Army. Carl was generous with his time and was a member of the American Legion Post 86, the Eagles and VFW. He was a devout Catholic, ushering for years at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 472. He was a volunteer bell ringer for the Salvation Army and was known to many as the “garbage guy” for his years of recycling.  At the end of the day, Carl was generous, compassionate, solid, humble and God-fearing.

Carl is survived by his wife and children, his sister Betty (Gerald) Owens of Steubenville, sister-in-law Mickie Freeman of Amsterdam, OH, grandchildren Kristopher (Leah) of Taiwan,  Daniel (Anna) of Nashville, TN, Anna (Greg) Herrmann of Massillon,  Alexis Christakis of Cincinnati and John (Caitlyn) Christakis of Sommerville, MA and many nieces and nephews.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Michael,  siblings Helen, Nellie (Bob) Alvis, Lousie (Bob) Locke, Dorothy (Frank) Harasick, Marie (Dick) Bucher, Joe (Mary Ann) Oprisch and Herman Oprisch, and sister-in-law Janet (Kenny) Drake.

The family would like to thank the staff at East Ohio Regional Hospital and Skilled Care Nursing for their compassionate care and respect.  Special thanks also to Mike, Thelma, Kathleen, Kramer and Cowboy.
