Obituary

Chauncey E. Speaker, 95, beloved father and grandfather, died peacefully March 5, 2007 at his home in Bar Harbor, Maine. He was born July 2, 1911 in Delacs, North Dakota the son of Rev. William E. and Ruth E. (Brewer) Speaker. He returned to Ohio at the age of 6 where he resided until November of 2003 when he moved to Bar Harbor. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Olivetta M. (Blake) Speaker whom he married March 2, 1940. Together they owned and operated Speaker''s Supply Grocery Store in Steubenville, Ohio for more than 40 years. He was Protestant by faith.Chauncey was a man of many talents, a life long learner and a great spirit who never lost his sense of humor. While in Ohio he devoted much of his time to community service. He was a founding member of the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Squad and an organizer of the Jefferson County Water System. He served as County Superintendent for the Ohio State Highway Department. He was active in many organizations such as: YMCA, Beekeeper''s Association, Ohio Beautification Society, Jefferson County Litter Control Board, Masonic Lodge # 691 of Steubenville, and the Osiris Shrine - P.O. Box 2048 - Wheeling, W.Va. Chauncey loved the beauty of Mount Desert Island and a great day for him would be breakfast at Jordan''s in Bar. Harbor, a ride around the Island and dinner at Helen''s in Ellsworth.He is survived by a daughter, Connie Birkenmeier of Bar Harbor and a son - Daniel Speaker and wife Barbara of Steubenville, Ohio;three grandchildren - Tristan Birkenmeier, Kelly (Speaker) Leasure and husband Todd Jason Speaker and wife Alisha. Four great grandchildren - Daniel, Drake and Dylan Leasure and Zoe Speaker along with many special friends. He was much loved and will be sadly missed.Friends and family will gather for visitation 2-4 & 7-9 Tuesday March 13th at the Clarke Funeral Home - 302 Main St. - Toronto. 740-537-1234 or 800-588-1446.A funeral service and celebration of Chauncey''s life will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday - March 14th at the funeral home with Pastor Doug Schoeff of the First Christian Church of Steubenville officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery - Steubenville.Memorial contributions in memory of Chauncey may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Office of Development - 2900 Rocky Point Drive - Tampa, Florida - 33067-1460.
