Donald J. Smith, age 74 of Toronto, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at Lifeline Hospital in Wintersville.
Born December 14, 1938 in Weirton, West Virginia, he is a son of the late George E. and Mildred B. (Everhart) Smith. Don attended the Toronto and Chapel Hill Wesleyan Churches. He is a retired Gunnery Sergeant, serving for 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. During his time in the Marines, Don was among the first troops President Johnson sent to Lebannon; he served in Santo Domingo, 2 tours of duty in Vietnam, and the Cuban missle crisis. Don also served as a recruiter for the Marines in the Steubenville recruiting office, and worked in the Special Services at the Federal Building in Pittsburgh, PA.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
Don''s survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mrs. Mary Ann (Conlon) Smith of Toronto, whom he married January 16, 1965. Four daughters, Mrs. Beth Channels and her husband Del of Clinton, Ohio, Mrs. Rebecca Phillips and her husband Mark of Steubenville, Ohio, Mrs. Melissa Robison and her husband Jared of Toronto, Ohio, Mrs. Anita Baker and her husband Michael of Toronto, Ohio. Twelve grandchildren, Nathanael, Hannah, Bethany and Timothy Channels; Marissa and Andrew Phillips; Addison and Ryan Robison; Mahala, Kaleigh, Aidan, Ethan Baker; and a brother Ronald G. Smith of Panama City, Florida.
