Hannah Ruth Gilcrest, age 94, passed away on January 28 , 2013 at her home in Toronto. She was born May 8, 1918 in Columbus, Ohio the daughter of Emma Enid (Campbell) Gorsuch and Max Scott Gorsuch. Her family moved to Steubenville in 1929 and she graduated from Wells High School in 1936. She attended the College of Steubenville.
Hannah''s first job was as a book keeper with Manufacturer''s Light and Heat (now Columbia Gas). Over the years she held positions with Herdman Brothers, 1st National Bank, and Weirton Steel. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Toronto where she had she had served as Clerk of the Session. She was also a member of the DAR, Questers and the Three Arts Club. Previously she had been a member of the N and N Club, the Steubenville Junior and Senior Women''s Clubs, the Lilac Twig , and the Women''s Board of the Ohio Valley Hospital where she served as both president and treasurer as well as treasurer of the Gift Shop.
Hannah was married to Loren Miller Herdman who preceded her in death in 1954. They had two children, Frances Lee who died in 1955, and Lauren Jean Herdman Knepley who is married to Gregg G. Knepley and lives in Michigan.
In 1958, Hannah married Kenneth Mossman Gilcrest who preceded her in death. They have two children, Margaret Ruth Welker who is married to David A. Welker and lives in Centreville, Virginia and Kenneth J. Gilcrest of Toronto.
Hannah is survived by 6 grandchildren, Matthew Knepley, PhD (Chicago), Lauren (Knepley) Daniels (San Antonio), Andrew S. Knepley (New York), Peter L. Knepley (Cary, NC), Rebecca I. Welker (Centreville, VA) and Thomas K. Welker (Centreville, VA) as well as 5 great grandchildren; her sister Dorothy (Gorsuch) Wells of Steubenville and many nieces and nephews; her special friend and caregiver Ruth Blanton (Toronto). Her sister, Doris Boich, preceded her in death in 2011.
Friends and family will gather for visitation 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. and 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Clarke Funeral Home - 302 Main St. - Toronto. 740-537-1234 or 800-588-1446. Additional visitation will be held from 10:00 am. to 11:00 am. Saturday, February 2nd at the First Presbyterian Church - North Third St. - Toronto. A celebration service of Hannah''s life will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Michael Bongart officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Hannah''s memory may sent to the First Presbyterian Church, 116 North Third Street, Toronto, Ohio 43964-1416.
