James C. Eckard

October 13, 1936 – June 14, 2026

James “Jim” Chester Eckard, 89 walked into the arms of Grace June 14, 2026.

Born October13, 1936, to T. Chester and Dorothy “Dot” Eckard, he lived a full life, defined by love, generosity, and devotion to those around him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend, and brother to his fellow Masons. He will be remembered fondly for his wit, his stories, and his gift of inviting everyone to be a part of our lives, and part of our family.

He was a member of the Wintersville High School football team that earned a place in Canton’s Football Hall of Fame for going undefeated all four years while he was there. Shortly after graduating, he joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War. Once he left the military, he went to Milligan College in Tennessee, where he began his studies in theology. He studied The Bible in Greek, Hebrew, and English to have a greater understanding of it.  It was at Milligan that he met the love of his life, Mary (Johnson) Eckard, who preceded him in death.

He valued knowledge his whole life. Jim was continuously learning and enjoyed discovering everything and anything, especially history. He spent hours talking with friends and family, and treasured moments when everyone gathered. He was a devoted family man, and spoiled his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Jim had a few jobs when he and Mary were first married that may have included door-to-door salesman, insurance salesman, Burger Chef Manager (working for his father), and drag car racer (was this a job?). Jim spent most of his career as a supervisor for ODOT, where he became an advocate for those in the union. Firm, but fair, he was available to help with resources, advice, and guidance.

His passion was The Masons. His titles, achievements and accolades are far too many to list here. He was proud to have started a few chapters, helped continue and build a few chapters, and was always willing to help. One of his most treasured memories was a trip to Scotland for Scottish Rite. He returned with a new lease on life and was determined to begin Claddagh Councils everywhere.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. (Johnson) Eckard; parents, T. Chester and Dorothy V. Eckard; his sister, Kathleen L. (Eckard) Miller; his son in law, James A. Abel: and his grandson, Justin D. Abel.

Jim is survived by his children, James “Chet” C. Eckard II, Shannon K. Abel, and Timothy S. Eckard (Carrie L. Cronin). He leaves four grandchildren, Stephanie L. Abel (John M. Balderaz), James “Jay” C. Eckard III, Cary Ann Eckard (S. Casey Search), and Holly E. Eckard (Gregory S. Ross); four great-grandchildren, Emma June Search, Victor C. Riot, Thomas E. Eckard, and Onyx A.G. Balderaz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins from around the states.

Jim willed his body to The Body Farm at The University of Tennessee. Details on a celebration of his life will be made available as soon as they are confirmed.
