Robert B. Gabriel of Toronto, Ohio passed away Friday afternoon, August 5, at the Trinity Medical Center - West Steubenville. He had been seriously ill for three months.He was born October 14, 1916 near Prospect, Ohio, the only child of the late Elmer and Clara B. Fisk Gabriel. A 1934 graduate of Prospect High School, he was an excellent athlete participating in basketball, baseball and track. Following high school he had also played semi-pro baseball.He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army with the 12th Armored Division. A decorated veteran, he served on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge as an anti-tank gunner. Bob was a recipient of the Bronze Star for valor.His memberships and civic affiliations include Verne I. Mounts Post 368 American Legion in Prospect, Ohio, where he was also elected a village councilman. He served many years as a volunteer firefighter in Prospect. He had also held membership in the General Francis Marion Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Gabriel was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Toronto, Ohio. He retired in 1978 after working for the Ohio Edison Company for 32 years.On August 29, 1948, in the Prospect United Methodist Church he married Alice Anson, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters - Jane (Tal) Burkett of Prospect, Sue (Larry) Davidson of Toronto and Joy (fiancAC. Bob Siers) of Toronto. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Amanda Burkett and Lauren Davidson.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, August 9, from 2 to 4 and 7-9 P.M. at the Clarke Funeral Home - 302 Main St. - Toronto. 740-537-1234 or 800-588-1446.The funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 10th, in the First United Methodist Church in Toronto with the Rev. Kevin Rinkes officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. that day in Prospect Cemetery, Prospect, Ohio with the Rev. David Hoffman officiating.
