Obituary

Rosemary Bonofine, 82, of Toronto, died on Friday, May 15, 2026, with her daughter, Chelle (Michelle) holding her hand. She was in the care of the Neuro Critical Care Medical Team and Supportive Care Team at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, in Morgantown, WV.Rosemary was born on August 19,1943 in Toronto, the youngest of seven children of the late Peter and Savia (Vidrine) Bonfine.Rosemary was a 1961 graduate of Toronto High School and completed numerous courses at Sandhills Community College in Southern Pines, North Carolina. After marrying, Rosemary moved to Lordstown to raise her family. She became the official “Lyntz Road Summer Mom” for all the neighborhood kids. Rosemary was the Banquet Center Manager for the former Cesta’s Golden Gate Restaurant in Warren for many years. Rosemary relocated to Southern Pines, NC as a Convention Coordinator, then the Accounts Payable/Receivable Manager for the Pinehurst Hotel and Country Club. Rosemary then moved to Lenoir, NC as General Manager for Burger King.Longing to be near family, after seven years Rosemary moved in with her sister Ceil back home to Toronto, continuing to manage Burger King in Wintersville and administer the Steubenville Summer Food Program. Next, Rosemary took her friendly smile to Walmart Customer Service in Weirton. Several years later, she helped build the inside of the new Walmart in Steubenville where she continued in Customer Service. After 25+ years, Rosemary unofficially retired at the age of 80, a true force of nature. For the past 20 years Rosemary has lived as she wanted, on her own, in Toronto, taking pride in lighting and decorating her front porch for each season. Passersby would often stop to tell her how much they enjoyed seeing it. Rosemary lived a block away from the swimming pool, becoming part of the Toronto Senior Pool Ladies group.Rosemary was a member of St Francis Roman Catholic Church of Toronto; Jefferson County Board of Elections Poll Worker; and volunteered her time at the Jefferson County Humane Society and Animal Shelter. Rosemary also served as Treasurer for 15 years for the Toronto Senior Citizens Club, enjoying events, meals, and many bus trips.Rosemary was a talented seamstress and always loved to cook. She rarely needed a recipe and was always able to “just know” when the food was ready. Even though she was a vegetarian for 45 years, she would still cook anything, ensuring no one went without the food they liked or left hungry, and always had leftovers to take home.In addition to her parents, Rosemary was preceded in death by her newborn son Brian J Gill; sister Cecilia (Ceil) Horkulic; brother-in-law John (Jr) Zamborsky; sisters Magdalene (Maggie) Slater Vandewater and Ermaline (Erm) Teter; brothers Robert (Bill) Bonfine and infant brother Elson Bonfine.Left to forever cherish Rosemary’s memory is her daughter Michelle Gill and partner David Hall; sister Yolanda “Lem” Zamborsky; former spouse Russell Gill; companion cats Alley, Dude and Toffee; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, as well as numerous friends old and new.Rosemary’s celebration will be held Friday June 26th from 10a to 11a at St Francis Roman Catholic Church, corner of Euclid Avenue and Findley Street, Toronto.Funeral Mass with Liturgy will follow at 11a at St Francis with celebrant Father Thomas Vennitti.Memorial contributions in memory of Rosemary may be directed to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital – stjude.org; ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) – aspca.org; Shriners Hospitals for Children – shrinerschildrens.org; St Francis Roman Catholic Church – sfsjtoronto.com
