HAGY, William "Bill" Lee, 83, of Toronto, died Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Hilliard, OH, in the company his loving family following a long battle with multiple illnesses.
Bill was born Oct. 9, 1930, in Detroit, the younger of two sons of the late James R. and Martha J. Hagy, nAC.e Baker. Bill was a gifted orator and an enthusiastic baritone, a respected community leader, a friend to many, and a loving family man. Truly a self-made man, Bill financed his attendance at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN. He graduated in 1949. Bill married the love of his life, Phyllis Rose Carpino, in 1950.
He attended Bethany College in Bethany, WV, from 1950 to 1952 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served on the U.S.S. Warrington, a Gearing-class destroyer, as First Class Petty Officer, Fire Control Technician. Bill and his crewmates were sent into harm''s way during the 1956 Suez Canal Crisis. After leaving the Navy, Bill returned to school and graduated from Kent State University in 1958 with a B.A. in history. Following his graduation, Bill worked as a graduate assistant at Kent State, and later for B.F. Goodrich Company and Goodyear Aircraft Company, both in Ohio.
In 1967 he began his 30-year career at TIMET in Toronto, OH, where he retired as Director of Human Resources. While serving in a management position at TIMET, Bill enjoyed a relationship of mutual respect and even friendship with his TIMET management colleagues, as well as local members of the plant''s United Steel Workers Union.
Thriving on engagement with his community, Bill was elder of the First Presbyterian Church; an enthusiastic participant in the church choir; president of the Toronto Chamber of Commerce; president of the Ohio Valley Industrial Resources Association; a frequent speaker at special events such as Veteran''s Day remembrances; and a performer in local musical productions, including A Christmas Carol, in which he reveled in the role of Marley''s Ghost. He was a proud member of the Toronto Masonic Lodge #583 F&AM and the Toronto American Legion Post #86.
In 2008, Bill was honored as Citizen of the Year by the Toronto Chamber of Commerce for his dedication to family, the U.S. Navy, the First Presbyterian Church and the City of Toronto.
Bill is survived by his wife, Phyllis Rose Hagy, nAC.e Carpino; daughter Karen S. Mortland and her husband Bruce L. Mortland; son W. Thomas Hagy and his wife, Jane R. Hagy; and son Kenneth L.
