G.Richard "Ricky" Riggs Obituary

G. Richard “Ricky” Riggs age 75 0f Canton, OH formerly of Sugar Grove (Toronto), Ohio went to be in the arms of our Heavenly Father on December 8, 2023 at the Canton Christian Home in Canton, Ohio.

Ricky was born September 25, 1948 in Tacoma, Washington, the son of the late R. Lindsay and Kathryn (Johnston) Riggs and his biological father Richard Hazelip, all of Sugargrove, Ohio.

Ricky graduated in 1966 from Jefferson Union High School, Richmond, Ohio.

He then graduated from Marshall University in 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. There he served as the captain of the 1968 Marshall University Thundering Herd football team, and is a member of the All-Decade Team of the 1960’s as a defensive back and kick returner.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in Theology from Bethany Nazarene College (Kansas) in 1974. Ricky earned two master’s degrees from Asbury University Seminary Wilmore (Kentucky), one in 1980 in Pastoral Leadership, and one in 1991 in Urban Development. He also earned a master’s degree from Drew University in Divinity in 1982 before going on to earn a Doctorate in Humanities from Steubenville Franciscan University in 1998.

Ricky thought is path to greatness was going to be in professional football.  However, God had other plans! Ricky was a Pastor and Evangelist for nearly 50 years, including leading churches in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, and has evangelized on five continents. His love and affection for people and genuine concern for others opened the door to lead thousands of people to Christ. Ricky would always look for opportunities to spread the word of Jesus Christ to strangers by giving them one of the thousands of crosses and mustard seed coins he would carry in his pocket and give away. Even after he had forgotten the names of family and friends, he never forgot the name Jesus.  Mathew 25:21 “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

In addition to his parents (1998, 2000) and biological father (2018), Ricky was preceded in death by his brother Sandy Riggs (1966); grandson, Nicolas J. DeSarro (2015) and daughter-in-law, Docia Grimm (2019).

Ricky is survived by his wife Barbara A. (Belden) Riggs, whom he married on June 1, 1984, as well as a brother Donald Hazelip and sister Diane Harrison, and eight children; Nick Grimm, Shelley Grimm, Bob (Denise) Grimm, Frank (Brandi) Grimm, Ricky Riggs, Adam Riggs, Stephen Riggs and Jonathan Riggs as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
