George Phillip “Sonny” “Toronto Flash” Hawkes, age 83 of New Cumberland, a former Toronto resident, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020 at the Valley Hospice North Care Center, North, Steubenville.
He was born May 11, 1937 in Marietta, OH the son of the late George W. and Anna E. (Lucas) Hawkes.
George was an 83year member of the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Toronto; a 1955 graduate of Toronto High School; a member of the Toronto Knights of Columbus and the New Cumberland Lions Club and had received the International Lions Club Leonard Garrett Award for distinguished service.
He was a draftsman at Wheeling- Pittsburgh Steel Co. and had been employed at the Hancock Manufacturing Co. of Toronto, and the Jefferson County Library System
George is survived by his wife, Mary Dorothy (Jones) Hawkes whom he married October 23, 1999; nephew, Brad (Stacy) Jones of San Clemente, CA and great nieces, Anna, Lydia and Claire. Several cousins also survive.
Visitation hours for George will be held 5-8 P.M. Thursday, October 22nd at the Clarke Funeral Home, 302 Main Street, Toronto and from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. Friday at the St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Toronto followed by a Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 11 A.M. at the church with Father Thomas Vennitti officiating. Interment will follow at the New Cumberland Cemetery, New Cumberland, WV.
Memorial contributions in memory of George may be made top the New Cumberland Lions Club Eyesite Charities or the Jefferson County Animal Shelter.
